I don’t mean to brag, but I got through university successfully, and I would love to help some other fellow ADHD friends with their school work. These are some of my most functional tips that helped me get good grades and not get frustrated.
- Grab ALL of your things. EVERYTHING. BRING TOO MUCH CRAP. Nothing worse than finally settling down, realizing you forgot your pen. Then you need to get up again and you WILL get distracted.
- Take a lot of breaks. Concentrating can be a huge challenge, especially when you don’t really enjoy a topic. Accommodate to this by scheduling breaks. Don’t take a break whenever you feel like it, plan it! Study for 30 min with a 5 min break if that is what it takes! I always look forward to my breaks and it motivates me to work until that time.
- Walk around. When the topic allows it, walk around. After I make flashcards or a summary, I walk the room or the house or even outside if the weather is nice. If you move while studying, you will feel less inclined to fidget, usually.
- Put on some background noise. I am very auditive, and sounds distract me. HOWEVER, when I put on soft and controlled sounds in the background, I can’t hear the actual background noise. I like this particular background “setting”, I just tune the singing lower, but this website has a LOT of good sounds. ASMR on YouTube can be a good solution too!
- Write. If you can’t walk around, write more. The action of writing also makes me sit relatively still.
- On your breaks, MOVE. Move. For the love of all that is good, move. Get that blood flowing, get oxygen in your brain, and get some of that energy out. I am not extremely hyperactive, but my brain needs the change in scenery and input.
I hope these tips helped anyone! ^^
