People seem to not know what a complex Character is so when they ask writers to make them (and they do) they aren’t happy with them. (Either they are too good of a person or too bad of a person) but they see a character (let’s use sans as an example) and hailed him as complex…he’s not actually. He’s straight forward. He’s lazy til it’s necessary and is a good guy. Probably the friendliest in the game since he doesn’t fight you til genocide. He’s complex as a banana. It’s okay to like sans even tho he isn’t that complex. It’s okay to like simple.

It baffles me to no end when people say he is but demonize Asgore..while putting Asgore’s characterization in sans. Projecting headcanons on sans isn’t complex, that’s you building around him. I do this with lysandre cause his writing sucks ass and I want a complex story which game freak is bad at writing. I’m not saying lysandre is complex…im saying my writing for him is.

Asgore and toriel are the morally grey Characters, alphys, undyne and mettaton are your complex Characters. this IS IN GAME. I don’t have to headcanon Asgore to be complex cause he already is. I don’t have to mold Asgore to fit my mold cause he’s already complex as is. He’s a suicidal man who’s trying to be a beacon of hope, something people with depression can relate to. Undyne is complex cause she still is bias towards humans til pacifist run. She is gonna kill you for her people. She has a goal and will do anything to reach it. Same with mettaton and Alphys. They both used each other to get what they wanted. They ended up apologizing and in mettaton’s king route he felt horrible how he used alphys. He’s complex in this light as well.

Complex Character on the more bad side would be ganondorf. He had a moral goal actually, in wind waker we learn he took Hyrule to save his people(yeah he killed people but it’s implied Hyrule is fucking racist)..the gods DROWNED HIS PEOPLE. he’s FURIOUS. his efforts to better his people’s lives was literally swept away by the gods. (Not the three goddesses who are technically kind. No the unnamed God’s who seem more malevolent.) It isn’t til in the fallen timeline ganondorf becomes overcome by hatred he’s lost all sense of humanity in him. That’s Denise’s doing. He’s complex..but he’s a bad person (I love ganondorf tho)

But fans get so pissy cause they don’t know what they want. Complex isn’t gonna be the same ole same ole. Complex means every complex Character means they are gonna be different in some way.

So it’s not they aren’t complex..it’s that you don’t like that Character.

this raises some questions as to what people want when they say they want “complex” characters.
i can only imagine they want characters who cry more or do bad things that have no real impact but make them seem edgier

Basically it you got it on the nose
