I’mma be real with y’all, Escapism seems to be majorly foreshadowing not just the next episode, the season finale, but a good chunk of next season as well.
Think about it!
We have two watermelon tribes, both of which pretty much worship Steven.
And two entirely different depictions of him:
Ones more pacifist, while the other is more aggressive.
Both of the groups seem to try and bring Steven to their side, and the pacifist melons even invade the aggressive melons village to make a melon barrier for Steven so he doesn’t get hurt by the more aggressive melons.
Steven Manages to escape and tries to build his raft with little success.
The melons then, once realizing that Steven is trying to make a raft to leave the island, decide to put aside whatever feud they had (for now at least) and help Steven, waving goodbye as he leaves.
Crewniverse could’ve easily just shown us Steven projecting to Lars instead, taking over his body and explaining his situation to the off colors so they could turn the ship around and set a course for homeworld, with them formulating a plan of escape on the way (although I strongly doubt this, seeing as we only know Steven can inhabit Lars while he’s sleeping, and I highly doubt pink zombies need to sleep).
We know that, in hindsight, a lot of “filler” episodes end up either:
A- setting up some sort of ability or aspect of Stevens already known abilities that comes into play in later episodes
Or
B- being MAJOR foreshadowing
Think about what major groups from this arc that these melons could represent.
Think about why crewniverse decided to show us the characters that have been in the back of everyone’s minds, if not completely forgotten about, in the middle of what is in my opinion the most climactic season of the show as a whole…
I'm a starting writer hoping to improve in the future. This is where I'll be posting short stories, reference sheets and more!
