Filler, by definition, is when an adaptation doesn’t follow the source material, they stray usually because the source material isn’t finished, or needs time to update, so they put in episodes that don’t matter to the canon. It started being used for Anime mainly, and later on moved on to other things.

First of, SU as a show IS the SOURCE MATERIAL. It can’t stray from the main story because it is the main story. What would more accurately be considered filler for SU would be the comics, that don’t matter to the show.

Second, all “filler” episodes in it, including this one, every single one affects the canon. Steven went back to Earth, and, after some hardship, he alerted the remaining Crystal Gems on Earth that they need help. This affects the canon. This will have consequences on the main plot.

Filler isn’t “slow episodes”, it isn’t “chill episodes”, and it isn’t “not-a-homeworld-episode” and “beach city episodes”.

This was a slow, laid-back episode that was meant as a moment of peace in the current fast paced events, before the one hour special hits when all shit goes down.
