A general fyi when working with autistic folks

If you frame something you intend to be treated as a command or direction as something more structured like a mere suggestion, odds are an autistic individual might not do it because it’s not an explicit instruction to act.

“You can empty the dishwasher if you want” is not a clear direction, very few people enjoy doing that sort of chore so odds are your autistic roommate won’t do it because they don’t want to, and you framed it as a suggestion, an option. It’s not something you expect them to do in their mind, and when you come home upset because “why are all the dishes not put away” that just upsets and confuses them because they failed to grasp the underlying meaning of your open ended parting comment from before
