so, about this scene right here

I’ve been thinking about it ever since I watched it. I cant help but notice that, despite seperating Steven from his gem, which by logic would’ve brought Pink/Rose back, it still kept reflecting Steven.

Not just because it’s his gem.

Not just because Pink is reformed as him, no.

Its because Steven is his own gem and has been ever since he was born. Steven Universe is not Pink Diamond, he’s not Rose Quartz – he’s just Steven. His own person. Throughout the series he repeats that he is Rose, that he is Pink. Because.. That’s what he should be, right? That’s what everyone seems to expect from him, because of his gem. That’s why he remembers certain things in Pinks life and Pinks feelings, yeah? Except, all while Pink is “stored” in the gem, Pink is no longer. Its only him.

The scene right here? That proves it to me. And while it proves Steven is not his mom or anyone else, I feel that it also shows his love towards himself, something that the series has also shown the importance of. I’m sure you all remember Roses video for him, where she says “I’m going to become half of you. And I need you to know that every moment you love being yourself, that’s me, loving you and loving being you.”

I have a feeling Steven really did believe that up until this moment. Steven believed that he wasn’t entirely by himself, that he shared a life with his mother this entire time, that he just had her gem and her powers. That the love he mightve felt mightve been something he imagined was there because of Rose. They’re not half Steven half Rose. Just.. Steven.

And then Steven finally realised he loves himself, that he alone loves him and thats all he needed. While I expected to see Pink or Rose show up after that ghastly treatment from White, I was relieved to see that it was his own reflection. It proved that it was all him. The gem shows you who you are, it’s practically your core.

Tell the world who you are, that you’re not Rose or Pink. That you’re Steven Universe, someone entirely new.
