Why The Diamonds Redemption Work

Okay, so I know some fans are going to be upset about the Diamonds being redeemed so fast and while I totally understand why some people are upset, I’m honestly not that mad about the diamonds being redeemed so fast compared to other villains *cough* Starlight Glimmer *cough* cause it actually does work when you examine Change Your Mind more closely. Let’s start with Blue Diamond

Out of the three Diamonds, it seemed like Blue was the closest to Pink and as the show proved, was the most emotional about her death. However, even though she cared about her, she never understood how much mental harm she, along with Yellow and White, inflicted on her. That is until Steven made her realize that all the times she has reprimanded Pink for something, she would activate her powers and make Pink cry. In the real world, a person can hurt someone without even realizing it all the time until someone confronts them about it. So the fact that Steven confronts Blue on the fact that she always made Pink cry made Blue realize something that was always obvious to Pink, but not to herself. What’s more, once she learned what she was doing and finally understand why Pink left in the first place, she feels terrible and remorseful for what she and the other diamonds have done for her and sett out to make things right.

Next is Yellow, which I’ll admit, I had a harder time seeing her be remorseful then Blue but again, the show actually pulled off her redemption. While she didn’t make Pink cry on command since she doesn’t have Blue powers, we have seen in flashbacks that despite caring about Pink, she would constantly belittle her and not take her seriously. She saw the way Pink acted as childish and not dignified of that as a diamond yet at the same time, Pink being so different is what made Yellow love her so much. Because of what she loves about Pink contrasting with what she though a Diamond is supposed to be. Because of this, it would result in Yellow always reprimanding Pink and looking down at her. Yet as Steven explains to Yellow Diamond; if you try and make this empire perfect if you just wipe away everything you see as flawed, you lose the things that make you happy, like hot dogs or in Yellow case, Pink. Again, all it took was for Yellow to realize something she herself has been trying to ignore for thousands of years. It wasn’t the earth that took Pink away from her, it was her and the other diamonds that pushed Pink away.

Now White Diamond is the trickest of the three since unlike Yellow and Blue, we never got to know her character for that long or got to know what her relationship with Pink was like similar to how we learned what Pink relationship was like with Yellow and Blue. However, it is interesting to note that when talking about Yellow and Blue impurities, she says that Pink is the part of herself that she always have to suppress.  Now, we know that the Diamonds all used to be close together with White herself even caring about Pink, yet she talks about how she had to suppress that part of herself. This connects to the moment with her blushing and saying how she isn’t supposed to be like this. Now, this all speculation but considering what has been established in the show, White Diamond is the highest-ranking member of the diamonds since even Blue and Yellow are terrified of her. This seems to be because she may have either been the first gem ever made or a gem made to be the leader of other gems since again, she talks about how she isn’t supposed to be like this, which sounds like something a creation would say. Pink may have brought out a side of her that she was never supposed to show yet perhaps something she enjoyed deep down. We know that White became pretty remote after Pink Diamond death for millenniums so perhaps during that time any emotion she did once have disappeared and it wasn’t until Steven did she feel an emotion outside of her spectrum. Again, I will admit that out of the three diamonds, White is the toughest one to defend, but I still think her redemption works well enough, even though it would have been helpful to understand her character a bit more.

Yet the key factor to the diamonds redemption, and in my opinion, all villainous redemptions, in general, is regret. If a villain is truly sorry about what they’ve done, realize what they’ve done was wrong, and decide to be a better person, then that’s a good redemption. There are of course other factors to a villain redemption such as motivation, how much we know about the villain, how we have seen the villain progress and more, but in the case of the Diamonds, I believe their redemption works better than some of the other redemptions I’ve seen in fiction.
