This episode was what i originally expected it to be, before the promo art dropped. Except, did anyone really think watermelon stevens, of all people, would make their return?

There are a bunch of ways to read the whole situation we were presented with in this episode, here are my 2 main views:

1. they stand for different approaches Steven can take and how he will need both to carry himself forward. He seems to have chosen the more pacifist one to clam down the shark (the diamonds).

2. The 2 watermelons being worshipped are Blue and Yellow, eventially giving in to their people’s needs and allowing Steven to go. White is the shark, again being dealt in a more pacifist manner.

Other than that, nice episode. Underwhelming a bit, but we can’t really expect a whole arc of intensity (especially when it ends on a 1 hous special).

What some of the SU Fandom thinks “Escapism” was:

  • Boring and disappointing filler

What “Escapism” actually was:

  • A “calm before the storm”-type episode, designed to give us a slight breather in a very lore/angst heavy arc.
  • A display of Steven’s continued determination and resilience in his goal to get help for his friends and family (AKA Connie and the Crystal Gems).
  • An episode that wasn’t actually bad, but was seen as such by people who spent months overhyping it for themselves after first hearing the song so long ago.

Sometimes you just gotta… you just gotta astral project across galaxies into a sentient watermelon, upend a highly allegorical fruit society, sail the ocean on a raft fighting off giant watermelon sharks, and play charades and pictionary with your cat and your dad back home trying to get Bismuth to come break you out of Diamond Jail. You know?

tbh this new episode was exactly like a slow-paced Adventure Time episode and seeing that Adam Muto boarded it + I already knew the Watermelon Stevens were heavily involved I wasn’t expecting people to like it that much and I was right. I personally thought it was nice tho, not as bad as people make it seem but this fandom has always been dramatic as hell so what do you expect
